SERIES STATEMENT

Almost a seamless transition from the 2010 G.O.D. series that focused on the effects of one environmental disaster, the Unnatural Disaster series (a name reprised from a 1985-86 group of works) broadened the subject. It is becoming harder and harder to ignore the extremities of recent weather and geological disasters.

I have included imagery indicative of earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes, tornados, extreme drought, water shortages, wildfire, changes in wildlife, and other signs of the effects of global warming. Our environment is changing and and that can no longer be ignored.

Related: my lifetime oeuvre contains an ongoing engagement with animals and animal metaphor. I have also continued the apocalyptic tone from the G.O.D. series.

I am still combining the ancient painting media of encaustic (pigment mixed with beeswax) with cutting-edge digital collage, learning to archivally incorporate digitally printed images as a base and a kind of template from which to begin spontaneous interplay of mixed painting and drawing media. Integration is the challenge and goal of the actual painting process.

DIRECTLY BELOW is a 2003 painting done for a thematic exhibition, Fears and Aspirations, that fits well with the 2012 Unnatural Disasters series. Its title is Water Witch, oil on canvas, 72"x 48", © 2003.
